What the Blackwater River is actually like
The Blackwater is shallow, slow and sand-bottomed, and the water runs tea-colored from the tannins in the cypress and pine along the banks. It is undammed, averages roughly two and a half feet deep, and Florida State Parks calls it one of the cleanest sand-bottom rivers in the country. From a canoe that means a steady current doing most of the work, and bright white sandbars around the bends where you can pull out, wade, eat lunch and let the kids dig.

We are at 12375 Shammah Road in Holt, beside the Blackwater River State Forest, and it is an easy morning drive from anywhere in Escambia County. From Pensacola you head east, and most people plan on roughly an hour depending on how the Milton stretch is moving. From Cantonment and Molino you come east and a little south, a comparable drive. From Century, at the top of the county, you come down and across — the longest of the four, but still a straightforward morning.
