Split the Group Across Boat Types First
Most big groups want both. Canoes carry two or three people plus a cooler, so they suit anyone paddling with small kids, grandparents, or gear. Kayaks are lighter and quicker for folks who want their own boat. Get a rough count of:
Adults who want a kayak to themselves
Pairs and families sharing a canoe
Kids riding along in an adult's boat
Anyone who has never paddled before

Mixed Boats Drift at Different Speeds
Kayaks pull ahead. A canoe with three people and a full cooler falls behind. On a swift but easy river like ours, that gap stretches over a couple of miles without anybody doing anything wrong.
The fix is to pick regroup points before you launch. Our river is a designated Florida Paddling Trail and one of the cleanest rivers in the nation, lined with white quartz sandbars that make natural meeting spots. Two or three regroups keeps a party of thirty from becoming three separate trips, and the fast paddlers do the waiting.
Pick One Trip Length for the Whole Group
Our floats run from about 1.5 miles up to roughly 9.5 miles. Do not let people self select. Pick one length for everyone, sized for the least experienced paddlers.

Put One Person in Charge
Every group trip needs one person who owns the details: headcount, coolers, keys, and the phone. That person books the trip and counts heads at every sandbar and again at takeout. Have them call ahead, because large parties need boats set aside.

Two to four weeks is comfortable, and more for spring and summer weekends. Canoe rentals start around $30 per person and kayaks around $40 per person, so check current rates when you book.
