Single or tandem — which one to pick
Most people take a single: you steer your own boat, set your own pace and stop on whichever sandbar looks good. A tandem makes more sense with a child aboard, with someone new to the water, or when one of you would rather watch the cedars go by than paddle. From Pensacola, take I-10 east, get off at the Holt exit and head north toward the river — about an hour, a little more on a summer Saturday. From Cantonment and Molino, cut east to the interstate or take the back roads through Pace and Milton, and budget a bit over an hour. Century, at the top of the county, runs roughly an hour and a half. From Milton you're about half an hour out.
The last stretch is the good part: traffic thins and you end up under longleaf pine with state forest on both sides. There are plenty of kayak trips near Escambia County, but few where the drive is part of the point.
